Effective Strategies to Address Inattention to Results
How cultivating ‘one team’ synergy drives better business outcomes
Many technical leaders face a common pitfall with their teams or in collaboration with stakeholders: "inattention to results." Leading teams and coaching leaders across various industries, I've observed how a lack of focus on shared success can undermine even the most talented teams. Often, the issue is because team members, driven by their individual agendas, ego, or status, lose sight of collective goals and outcomes.
Understanding the Root Causes
The primary root of inattention to results often lies in a breakdown of accountability and alignment. Individual goals overshadow collective aspirations when team structures foster silos rather than synergy. Distractions, irrelevant activities, and unclear priorities exacerbate the situation, deterring the team from achieving 'we' results. Ego-driven metrics, where rewards and recognitions are misaligned with team success, contribute significantly to this issue.
In one of my previous roles, we had individual organizational progress dashboards. While these were great for monitoring the status of individual or team deliverables, they often led to a myopic view where everyone optimized for 'green' without considering the necessary trade-offs across teams and the broader impact. It's natural to celebrate when "my team is green," but what does it mean if my partner's team is "red"?
Breaking through this siloed mindset required shifting our mindset to a ‘one team’ approach, implementing a more holistic dashboard that reflected cross-team dependencies and metrics based on OKRs (objectives and key results).
The ‘one team’ approach requires difficult but crucial conversations about priorities, resource allocations, mutual respect, and accountability to drive collective success rather than individual achievements. Shifting to this approach yielded almost immediate results with improved communication, transparency, trust, and respect across stakeholders.
Strategies for Fostering a ‘One Team’ Results Mindset
Reinforce the Vision, Mission, and Values: Consistently communicate and align your team with the organization's vision, mission, and values. Use OKRs (objectives and key results) to constructively guide the teams' efforts toward common goals, ensuring everyone is rowing in the same direction.
Prioritize Team Success - Encourage your team members to prioritize the team’s achievements over personal accolades. This shift in perspective is crucial for building a culture where collective success is valued above individual triumphs.
Focus on Impactful Tasks - Identify and prioritize tasks that have the most significant impact on the team's objectives. This focus helps minimize distractions and keeps the team aligned with its core goals.
Regular Tracking and Reporting—Establish a clear system for tracking and reporting the ‘one team’s’ progress and impact. Regular updates keep everyone informed and foster a sense of accountability and urgency.
Recognize and Reward Collectively - Develop a recognition system that celebrates team achievements, not individual contributions. This approach reinforces the value of collaboration and mutual success.
Learn as a Team - Embrace failures and successes as learning opportunities for the team. This mindset helps build resilience and a culture of continuous improvement within the team.
Inattention to results is a challenge that can derail even the most skilled teams. Technical leaders can ensure their teams meet and exceed their goals by fostering a culture of accountability, alignment, and collective success. Remember, the strength of a team lies in the talent of individuals and the ability to unite towards a common purpose. Leading with a ‘one team’ approach ensures everyone's achievements are aligned with team success.
